What is a Hair Transplant?
Hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which hair grafts are moved from donor area to recipient area where the hair density is less or zero. Mainly, hair transplant is done to treat male pattern baldness. This procedure consists of taking hair grafts from the back of scalp and then implanting to the bald scalp using hair extractor. Now a days hair transplant is done not just for scalp hair, but also to restore eyebrows, eyelashes, chest hair, beard hair, pubic hair and to fill in scars.
Hair Transplant Procedure
A patient can choose from a number of methods for harvesting hair follicles after having consulted a surgeon and getting the scalp analyzed. The two main ways in which donor grafts are extracted are: Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)
This is the most common technique for extracting hair and follicles from a donor site in which the surgeon harvests a strip of skin from the posterior scalp. It is also known as strip harvesting. FUT leaves a thin linear scar in the donor area, which is normally covered by a patient’s hair even at relatively short lengths.
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
The FUE procedure is costlier as it requires each hair to be individually harvested from the donor site and transplanted to the recipient site. It can take from a few hours to over two consecutive days depending upon the number of grafts.
Hair Transplant Cost and Care
The cost of hair transplant depends on various factors, such as, the number of grafts required by a person, area of baldness, donor supply, hair density, technique used, number of sessions required and city chosen for the transplant. It has little to no side effects or complications. Scabs are formed on each graft within 24 hours but shed in two weeks. The hairs start to grow naturally in 10-16 weeks and continue to grow for one’s lifetime.
